A dangerous road which has been the site of a number of serious collisions, including a fatality, is set to become safer for motorists.

Main Drain South Road in Bunyip will become equipped with 3.6 kilometres of guardrail in a bid to improve safety along the road, between Evans Road and Little Road.

The road was identified as a “high priority” for safety improvements by Cardinia Shire Council, who secured $500,000 through the Federal Government’s Blackspot program.

Between 2014 to 2023, the government will put $1 billion towards the Blackspot program which targets roads where crashes are occurring by implementing safety measures such as roundabouts and traffic signals.

This particular road has a default speed limit of 100km/h, with all of the crashes occurring as a result of driver loss of control.

In most cases, drivers have collided with property fences on the south side or into the Bunyip River on the opposite side, which currently has no guardrail.

Some guardrail is also set to be installed in short sections on the south side near residential properties.

Council have begun consultation with Melbourne Water and nearby residents will be notified soon.

Safety Barrier Solutions will carry out the works at a cost of $513,898, with construction set to commence in mid-December.
