Akoonah Park Men’s Shed received a $500 grant from Commonwealth Bank Berwick branch on Thursday 28 November as part of a nationwide community donation program.

Commonwealth Bank’s Berwick branch team voted to support the great work of the Akoonah Park Men’s Shed.

“With the festive season approaching, it’s a timely opportunity for us to show our support for the Akoonah Park Men’s Shed,” branch manager Andrew Russell said.

“In particular, they provide emergency support to the community, so it’s great to be able to give back and support this work.”

The Men’s Shed has not decided how the funding will be spent yet, but president Lindsay Harding says it will go to good use.

“It will most likely be put towards activities that we do within the shed,” Mr Harding said.

“Our main thing is men’s health so the idea of the Men’s Shed is for men to be aware that if they are feeling lonely there is a place they can come.

“We really appreciate the grant.”

With just under 180 members, the youngest 26 and oldest middle 80s, the Akoonah Park Men’s Shed provides a “very open situation” where men can visit, have a cup of tea or coffee, watch TV, create in the workshop and socialise.

“The men can do anything they want in the workshop,” he said.

“Every Thursday we have a meeting and just throw things around about what the shed is up to and answer any queries.

“We are always welcoming new members.”
