A 10-year-old Pakenham girl has spent her school holidays painting rocks and selling them in exchange for funds for firefighters.

Bridgewood Primary School student Izzy Martin decided to decorate the rocks during a play date with a friend, and the motivation behind the project has warmed the community.

“Firstly my friend Georgia had an idea to paint rocks and I said we could and then after we had painted a couple of rocks I made a ‘selling rocks’ sign,” Izzy explained.

“After a couple of minutes I thought it would be a good idea to raise money for something so I thought to myself ‘what is a good fundraiser’.”

Izzy remembered that people had been donating tirelessly to the Australian bushfire crisis and wanted to do her part to help those in need.

“I put (on the sign) that all the money is going to be donated to the firefighters,” she said.

“My neighbours stopped and that’s when I knew that this was a good idea.”

Mother Samantha helped to boost business, by way of a Facebook post, which attracted generous community members to travel to her stand on Victory Drive to pick up a creative keepsake.

Izzy is selling the rocks at the very reasonable price of 50 cents for a small rock; $1 for the large ones; $1.50 for personalised rocks and an ‘extra-large’ rock will set you back just $2.

At last count, Izzy had raised over $220 and has vowed to keep her little business open a little longer before donating all money to the CFA.
