The Pakenham library was practically underwater after the heavy downpour on Monday afternoon, 21 January.

Casey Cardinia Libraries (CCL) CEO Chris Buckingham estimated about 60 percent of the library’s floor was drenched by about 2.45pm.

“It has been an interesting 24 hours,” he said. “At this stage we’re not aware of any damage other than the carpet.

“There’s no obvious damage to the stock but the moisture levels in the library will be elevated so we will need to make sure we don’t end up with any moisture damage.”

CCL and Cardinia Shire Council are working closely to ensure the safety of staff and the community.

Mr Buckingham said the clean-up has commenced and staff are currently planning to reopen the library on Wednesday 22 January.

Meanwhile, CCL expect to open the Pakenham hall for those wanting to study.
