The first day of school was a success for students and staff at John Henry Primary School in Pakenham.

More than 150 foundation students waved goodbye after their parents and carers welcomed them to their new classrooms on Thursday morning.

After many emotional farewells, the parents and carers gathered for morning tea to share stories of their child’s first morning and the beginning of their schooling journey.

“The students have settled in really well having completed a thorough six-week transition program in term four of last year,” principal Tanya Roberts said.

“The transition program covered all the important day to day information required to be successful students at John Henry Primary School.”

On day one, the new foundation students paired up with Grade 4 students as part of the school’s ‘buddy’ program.

The Grade 4 students will eat lunch with their buddies and show them around the school each playtime for the first few weeks to ensure they settle in well.
