At the time the bushfires ravaged the east of the state, many generous individuals and organisations did their bit to help those affected get back on their feet – but the battle is not over and much-needed support is ongoing.

Debbie Batchelor from Bayles is playing her part, by collecting essential supplies from community members across the Cardinia area before dropping the donations to Gippsland Horse and Stock Safe in Fulham.

“This battle is ongoing and there are many unsung heroes amongst us, I just want to do my bit,” she said.

“I’ve seen videos of the poor people and they’re just buggered and desperate.

“They’ve got nothing and I want to do my bit but I can’t do it by myself so I’m calling out to everyone who wants to donate.”

Ms Batchelor said the affected communities are still in need of feed for horses, cattle, goats, chickens, dogs and cats. Hay is also needed and Ms Batchelor happy to organise for larger quantities to be collected.

“If any local business or individuals have bottled water and fresh fruit veggies, meat and bread these are needed as well,” she added.

“I will take as much as I can. Hopefully we will get a lot of bags of feed and fresh produce.

“We can’t let the momentum stop. We need people to help.”

Gippsland Horse and Stock Safe are requesting fuel card vouchers to assist the volunteer drivers in continuing their valuable work.

“Paul Goby is another great person who is trying to provide farmers with materials to rebuild their fences so if anyone is happy to donate fence posts and wire I can get that to his group,” Ms Batchelor said.

Ms Batchelor will be available to collect donations in and around Bayles while her son Callum Thomas, will be collecting in Pakenham.

With the goal to deliver as much as she can, Ms Batchelor expects to head to Fulham on Friday 22 February.
