Easter on the approach

As Easter approaches, two Berwick children have come up with an isolation friendly activity for kids of all ages to enjoy.

Eight-year-old Naomi and her six-year-old brother Josh have created an Easter egg hunt for local children to enjoy while out exercising amidst Covid-19 restrictions.

With the help of their neighbouring friends, who wish to remain unnamed, the children painted and hid 20 river stones, which had been decorated with bright colours and Easter patterns along a popular Berwick walkway.

The siblings felt inspired after the great teddy bear hunt adventure and wondered whether they’d be able to build on the popular initiative.

“We came up with the idea of the egg hunt to try to entertain children who are exercising during the lockdown,” Naomi explained.

“At first we had planned to draw Easter eggs and write Easter jokes on them, but we were worried that paper eggs would become ruined in the wet.”

But after some trusty adult advice, the kids become equipped up with an ever better idea.

“Mum’s friend suggested creating rock eggs instead – painted rocks like people use for geocaching.

“In the end the kids of mum’s friend painted some rocks for the egg-hunt too so it was a joint effort.”

The 100 metre path, which is located off Avebury Drive in Berwick, features homemade signs at either end with ‘Welcome to Bunny Land’ signs and instructions on how to spot the stones.

To ensure the activity is Covid-19 friendly, participants are only required to spot the stones rather than physically touching them.

The creative children hope their egg-spotting activity will bring a little cheer to the local community.

As for the Easter weekend, Naomi and Josh will spend their isolation doing “crafty things” like dyeing eggs and making Easter bonnets.

“We’re going to have an Easter Bonnet Parade with our friends and family via Zoom,” Naomi said.

“And we’re going to celebrate Jesus’ death and resurrection in our lounge room, our church has services online, on Good Friday and Easter Sunday,” Josh added.
