Rubbish piles up

Plastic bags, buckets, cushions, drink bottles, cat scratching posts, footballs, trophies, electrical wires, books and pots were among the items left scattered across the nature strip

A “giant” pile of rubbish reappeared on a nature strip in Pakenham, after the council cleared another heap from the same spot following complaints last month.

Pakenham resident David Connor spotted a pile dumped near the intersection of Macleod Court and Tyalla Way for a second time on Thursday 19 October.

“There still seems to be a lot of hard rubbish on nature strips around the place for various periods of time,” he said.

“I don’t know if it’s due to people not organising for them to be collected or not knowing how the new collection process is managed now.”

Mr Connor said he hopes the council have “improved their reporting process on this manner”.

“I say that because when I rang them in the past to report hard rubbish on nature strips, I was given the run around and transferred to different departments, only to eventually be told ‘that information was confidential’,” he recalled.

“Why is hard rubbish booking information considered confidential?

“I’m not asking for the resident’s details; I’m reporting hard rubbish on a nature strip that hasn’t been collected.”

Cardinia Shire Council removed the dumped rubbish on Friday 30 October.

“The location was checked again today (Monday) and there is no more dumped rubbish on site,” a council spokesperson said.

“If residents have hard waste they need removed, we encourage them to book a hard waste collection.”

Residents can book two free hard waste collections each year with up to two cubic metres per collection.

Extra material will be the responsibility of the resident to remove in a timely manner.
