The Covid-19 lockdown has been hard on everyone, but it’s been particularly difficult for elderly retirement village residents.

But Evergreen Retirement Village resident Bev Hinton managed to find the positives out of a mostly negative situation.

Throughout the Covid scare, Ms Hinton never lost her creative flare, which allowed her remain active and busy.

From painting outdoor furniture to making button bracelets, Ms Hinton also created wall hangings and decorative photo frames, but her latest project has proven to be the biggest hit.

With masks set to remain mandatory, the craftswoman decided it was “fitting” to make “fabulous face coverings”.

“I couldn’t find anything else to paint, so I thought what else could I do now? So I made masks,” she laughed.

“It’s been fantastic. I’m a person who normally goes out every day, so I’ve surprised myself because I didn’t think I could fill in the days in lockdown like I have.”

While most people would use a sewing machine, all masks made by Ms Hinton are completely handmade and unique.

“They’re all hand sewed with different designs, sequins and buttons. I have made a lot and have just done 30 Christmas ones,” she explained.

“I first sent them out to some of my friends and family and they were just so excited. It was something for them to look forward to.”

The op shop volunteer, who has only just been able to get back in-store, hopes to sell her creations at the upcoming Toomuc market.

But people can also call the Evergreen reception to place an order.

“We cannot believe how much Bev has shone through the pandemic. She’s been nothing short of amazing and we’re so proud to have her in the village,” Evergreen assistant manager Sharyn Allsop said.

Ms Hinton, who lives alone after losing her husband to Alzheimers, said she was amazed at how well she coped during lockdown.

“You’ve just got to fill in your days on your own, but I’m surprised at how well I’ve done,” she said.
