The Jefferson Place complex in Garfield was buzzing with activity on Thursday 20 May, as community members came together to enjoy some delicious food and raise much-needed funds for cancer research for their Biggest Morning Tea.

Dozens of people came along on Thursday morning to share a scone, sandwich or slice of home-made cake at the community event – and most of all, to catch up and help support a worthy cause.

One of the event’s organisers, Wendy Smyth, said that it had been a little stressful in the lead up to the event but the community had rallied together and managed to make it a huge success.

“It seems to be going really well and everyone seems to be having a good time and helping out,” Ms Smyth said.

“And it’s just good to see all the people out again!”

Ms Smyth said that there had been many helping hands who had worked behind the scenes, baking delicious goods and decorating the complex at Jefferson Place in preparation for the morning tea.

The community organised a range of fundraising activities including a raffle and auction, which featured a wide range of produce that was kindly donated by a lot of local businesses, and morning tea participants paid a $5 donation upon entry.

At the end of the day, Ms Smyth said that they were delighted to reveal that the Garfield community had managed to raise over $1,500 for the Cancer Council – a fantastic result.

Overall the event was clearly a huge success – and Ms Smyth wanted to thank everyone involved for their generosity and support for such a worthy cause.
