Community power has driven the creation of a beautiful mural with an important message in Drouin.

Two vibrant red rosellas have brightened up the corner of Hope Street and Commercial Place after a small group of local residents decided to organise and fund the project.

Coordinator Jeannie Haughton said the group hoped the mural would spark discussion about the importance of nature, particularly trees and birds.

“We wanted to do something uplifting and inspiring in the community,” she said.

“It is a really exciting way to get people thinking about things, particularly the lack and loss of trees in Drouin due to development.

“If we don’t have trees, we lose our birds.”

Jeannie said the dreary corner would now be a feature of the town, the wall of which was offered by local business people Bill and June Burrows.

“We decided we can do it, we can make a difference in the town ourselves,” she said.

The project was supported by the Committee for Drouin and Friends of Drouin’s Trees and funded by private donations.

The mural was designed and painted by Dan Wenn of 90 Degrees Art.
