Despite what their name suggests, a number of new scarecrows have been bringing joy to locked down residents in Garfield and surrounding towns as a new competition sparks creativity in the area.

An initiative organised by the Garfield Community Garden, the scarecrow competition is now in full swing, with a number of new hessian faces popping up in gardens throughout the area.

Local residents of all ages (in both Garfield and neighbouring towns) are being encouraged to get involved, as the winner is set to take out a delicious prize for their artistic efforts – a $70 meat tray, kindly donated by everyones favourite local butcher, Country Style Meats.

The Garfield Community Op Shop were also doing their bit to support the fun initiative, by donating second hand clothes for the scarecrows to wear.

Meg Platte, one of the organisers of the competition said that it was great to see the many creative entries that had popped up so far and said it was a great way to have “a bit of fun” during these difficult times.

“The feedback from the people who have done it so far is that they’ve loved it – both kids and adults,” she said.

“It’s a great way to have some fun – and you’re never too old to create a scarecrow!”

Garfield resident Lisa Soefting said that she and her kids had had a great time creating their scarecrow, “Russell Crowe” for the competition.

“It’s a great initiative of the Garfield Community Garden,” she said.

“My kids have enjoyed the project thoroughly… these things certainly lift their spirits, especially at the moment.”

To enter the competition, residents must create their masterpieces and put them on display in their front gardens for everyone to enjoy.

Once up, entrants need to take a photo of their dashing scarecrows and post their pictures to the Garfield Community Garden Facebook page, where their names will then go into the running to win the meat tray.

The winner will be drawn at 12pm on Saturday 16 October out the front of Country Style Meats on Garfield’s Main Street – so there’s still a few weeks left to get your creative hats on!

So what are you waiting for? Time to get scary!
