Don’t just post on Facebook, call 000

Police have asked people to phone 000 rather than post on Facebook when it comes to reporting illegal activity in the community.

Hoon driving, burnouts, firecrackers and noise complaints are common grievances posted online via community Facebook pages, but police say doing so doesn’t help prevent similar actions in the future.

Kooweerup Police Sergeant Kevin Iles said officers often find out days later about incidents that have occurred from social media, but by then it’s often too late.

“People are quick to jump on social media to report incidents,” Sgt Iles said.

“We try to look on those pages, but people aren’t calling the police.”

Sgt Iles said calling 000 would elicit a quicker response and could mean perpetrators get caught.

“I think the perception is that we aren’t here at night time, but we do work night shifts more and more often,” he said.

“If we’re driving around on night shift and there is a 000 call, we can quickly get there.”
