The Healesville-Kooweerup Road Upgrade is well underway as crews begin foundation works for the new twin bridges over Deep Creek.

About 60 piles will be driven to depths of 18 metres to support the new bridges, which will span 30 metres in length.

The new bridge will help improve safety along Healesville-Kooweerup Road by straightening out the existing bends in the road.

Works started on Tuesday 24 May and there will be no impact to motorists as these works continue through to Friday 17 June.

“Crews have already completed a huge amount of early works on the Healesville-Kooweerup Road Upgrade and are now ready to move into major construction,“ Major Road Projects Victoria project director Marc Peterson said.

Bass MP Jordan Crugnale said the upgrade would significantly improve safety, traffic flow and travel times for road users across Melbourne’s southeast.

“Works are already underway on the new bridges over Deep Creek, which will remove sharp bends from this stretch of road and see major safety outcomes for motorists and community,“ she said.

The two bridges will be built as separate structures to let light and moisture penetrate under the bridge structure, and support vegetation growth and creek wildlife.

The twin bridges will feature two lanes each way as well as a shared use path for pedestrians and cyclists.

A number of safety measures on Healesville Koo Wee Rup Road will be introduced including a speed reduction from 80km/h to 60km/h, new line marking to ban overtaking, the installation of ‘no overtaking’ signage and line marking changes at Ballarto Road to formalise the right-hand turn lanes.

Temporary traffic lights will also be placed at Hall Road to make turning onto the road safer when construction traffic moves in and out of the intersection.

The Healesville-Kooweerup Road Upgrade is expected to be completed by 2025.
