Kooweerup Secondary College students and staff embraced diversity for Harmony Week.

In recognition of the different cultural backgrounds of students at the school, a free dress day was held on Tuesday 21 March with all money raised going to Sikh Volunteers Australia.

Students were encouraged to wear orange or an outfit that represented their cultural heritage.

The Student Representative Council (SRC) and Vocational Major students planned a variety of activities for students to share in the day including a free vegetarian curry food van ran by Sikh Volunteers Australia, photo booth, jewellery making, origami and face painting.

African drumming and Bollywood dancing were among the special incursions held last week at the school.

History teacher Nicola Power said the week was all about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging.

“It was great to see our school community come together and celebrate this important event,” she said.

Ms Power said Sikh Volunteers Australia presented information to Year 8 and Year 12 students about the Sikh way of life, and the work they do in the local community to support people in need.

“We were then treated to free vegetarian curries from their food trucks, and over 400 were handed out. Through the free dress held that day, we raised over $1000 to donate to the Sikh Volunteers Australia,” she said.

SRC member Ethan said the events helped pave the way for new students to be aware of different cultures.
