The Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne paid a visit to the Lovers Lane site in Garfield to scope out the best ways to nurture Bandicoots, as the area is preparing for 5000 plants to be planted by the community.

Eilish Roberts is the Southern Brown Bandicoot Outreach Officer for Royal Botanical Gardens Victoria based in Cranbourne, she did a walk around with Geoff Lockwood from Southern Fauna & Ecology and Bill Atkinson and Pam Cunningham from Cannibal Creek Landcare Group on Thursday 6 June.

The patch of land along Lovers Lane in Garfield is currently being revegetated by Cannibal Creek Landcare Group with assistance from Melbourne Water.

The land runs along Walker Road Drain which links to the Bunyip River, these lanes of waterways are corridor used by wildlife to migrate along habitats.

Many fauna reside through the area, but the one of concern is the endangered Southern Brown Bandicoot.

Eilish came to Lovers Lane to see for diggings of Southern Brown Bandicoots and see the plants species that have been put in recently.

She would give advice as to what is best to plant to encourage Bandicoots and point out places of note that can serve as a safe residence for the endangered species.

This will inform Cannibal Creek Landcare’s plan for their next community planting day coming up next month.

They a stock of 5000 plants ready to fill the area and they are calling on the community to have a day out with the family to help revegetate local lands for wildlife to thrive.
