Beaconhills College was buzzing with excitement last week in celebration of Harmony Day and Cultural Diversity Week.

The canteens featured a unique cuisine each day treating everyone to a diverse food experience, and multicultural activities had students involved in – cultural dancing and music demonstrations, Indigenous language and story time sessions, international food sharing, origami and dance workshops and making artwork for a special ‘culture wall’ in the Middle School quadrangle.

Danielle Negri – deputy Head of Middle School Pakenham Campus said, “Our Harmony Day celebrations aimed to recognise our community’s diversity and bring together students from all different backgrounds, to share and learn about other cultures.”

“It was lovely to see so many students engaged in the sessions.“

Joining Officer Gurdwara

Beaconhills College Berwick Campus also joined with the Officer Gurdwara, also known as the Green Gurdwara of Victoria, for a day of planting and crafting on Wednesday 20 March.

The event centred on crafting garden beds from discarded materials. Dr. Harpreet Singh Kandra, a community volunteer and academic at Federation University, spearheaded this endeavour alongside the local students.

This initiative serves as a tangible illustration of the Circular economy in action, according to Dr. Kandra. He highlighted the common challenge faced by waste managers with tons of used tires and advocated for viewing waste as a misplaced resource. Dr. Kandra organised an activity where students repurposed the used tyres to create garden beds. In this hands-on project, students planted various vegetables in 25 tyres, contributing to waste reduction in landfills and consequently mitigating carbon pollution.

This endeavour represents a win-win scenario for all involved. The community benefits from increased vegetable production for their free Community Kitchen, while the growth of these plants aids in carbon sequestration. Moreover, students gain practical experience in Circular economy principles, alleviating headaches for waste managers in the process.
