A data breach that has put councils on alert has not affected Cardinia residents at this stage, council has stated.

Last week, Baw Baw Shire Council revealed they were subject to a data breach through their contracted after-hours call provider OracleCMS.

Information such as the customer contact information and call notes of over a thousand residents was potentially been exposed by the breach.

Many councils across Victoria use OracleCSM, including Cardinia Shire, but the council’s manager Business Transformation and Customer, Owen Hardidge said there was ’no ongoing risk’ of the breach in Cardinia.

“Cardina Shire Council is aware of the cyber security incident involving our after-hours service provider Oracle, and we understand that this potential data breach affects Oracle customers state-wide,“ Hardidge said.

“Council immediately modified its processes as soon as we were notified of the breach, until we were satisfied that there was no ongoing risk to customers.

“We understand that some councils have experienced a leak of resident data but to the best of our knowledge, none of our customers have been affected or had their data compromised.

The council said work will continue to ensure the privacy of residents.

“We have been working with the State Government and other agencies, and we will continue to monitor the situation,“ Hardidge said.

“If we have any reason to believe that resident data has been compromised, we will advise affected residents as soon as possible.

“Cardinia Shire Council is committed to protecting the privacy of our residents and customers. We will follow the advice of cyber security agencies and will continue to take strong measures to protect personal information.“
