REVIEW – ROUND 5

DIVISION TWO

Local rivals Beaconsfield and Cranbourne went to battle on Saturday morning at Holm Park, with the visiting Eagles prevailing after a stellar final term, 6.6 (42) to 3.5 (23).

The home side started strongly to take in a seven-point lead at quarter time, but Cranbourne wrestled back the momentum with an unanswered three-goal second quarter.

With Ebony Griffin and Sheridan Holland combing for what proved to be a vital four-goals, the visitors added a further two goals in the second half to run away with a comfortable win.

Others to impress in the win were Nicole Sheridan and Emily Wallace, while Sarah McCallum was named best for the home team.

The win lists Cranbourne into second spot and undefeated, while Beaconsfield is still searching for a way to find a win this season.

Cranbourne had the bye in Division One.

In other local results, Tyabb downed Pearcedale in an impressive performance, 11.6 (72) to 2.0 (12).

DIVISION THREE

Pakenham has shown great resilience to keep its undefeated record intact with a hard-fought eight-point victory over Warragul in the SEWF Division Three clash at Toomuc Reserve on Saturday.

The Lions had won three of their four games by comfortable margins heading in, but were forced to dig deep for their 4.5 (29) to 3.3 (21) victory against a side that had recently been regraded from Division 2.

It was a win that proved that the Lions will need to keep on improving if they are to maintain their lofty perch at the top of the ladder.

Warragul set the scene for a terrific contest with a highly-competitive first term.

The Gulls used the ball better than the Lions and found space, taking 10 marks to seven for the quarter. The visitors opened the scoring before Kerrie-Anne Micallef took a strong contested mark to give the Lions a one-point lead at quarter time.

Midfielders Lauren Hojnacki, Sophie Gray and Rosie Bureta kept the Lions in touch early, while some great marking from Danielle Case, Hayley Denboer and Rachel Betteridge gave the Lions a potent look up forward.

The Lions produced a much-improved second quarter, kicking 2.1 to no score to open up a 14-point lead at half time. The run and carry of Chloe Nagel had a real impact on the wing, while the ruckwork of Bel McGee and the defensive efforts of Mimi Henderson, Zoe Loudon, Nat Staunton and Tash Wakenshaw were also important.

Some great shepherding from Bec Domotor and Renee Carter showed the Lions had a team-first mentality, while Chloe Bluhm, Steph Scott, Beth Studd and Courtney Dodson all did important things to help set up the lead.

The Lions kicked the first goal of the third term before Warragul closed with the last two goals of the match.

Hojnacki showed her class with a best-on-ground display while Henderson, Gray, Bureta and Nagel will enjoy a rest over the Queen’s Birthday weekend after their hard-working efforts.

Officer, meanwhile, fought hard in its away clash to Frankston Bombers, but ultimately couldn’t get the job done, 5.9 (39) to 1.2 (8).
