GARFIELD

MALE’S YEAR OF ACHEIVEMENT ROLLS ON

The week just gone was the coldest of the year so far with foggy and icy mornings clearing into sunny afternoons for the main competition days of Thursday and Saturday.

Thursday saw a field of 65 turn out with just two players achieving their handicap or better in Trevor Franklin – with an A Grade win of 36 points defeating John Scale by the two points – whilst David Williams had the day’s best with a B Grade-winning round of 38 points to defeat Rob Coates by one point.

Gary Kelly got the C Grade result with a round of 34 points, three points clear of the next best in Rob Morris returning to the podium after a long absence.

Typical winter scores came in for the day with just 31 points down to a count back required to get a ball down the line.

Trevor Male had another consistent week with a third place finish on Thursday, with 32 points, to go with his Monday victory of 35 points, some three points clear of the next best in Ray Phillips and Bob Calderara whom both scored 32 points.

Saturday was the playing of the rescheduled June Monthly Medal which saw Shane Male continue on with his year of domination which has included the coveted Club Champion title, scoring a 65 off the stick, as well as currently playing off for the Ovens Match Play title for which he is the short priced favourite.

As we know the Ovens match play represents the best of the best and Male is already a two-time winner of the title as well as finishing runners up on more than one occasion.

On Saturday Male once again, playing off his mark of just two, won the medal with another great display with a round of net 66 or 68 off the stick.

Best B Grade scratch round was put together by Grant McKay with an 88 whilst Arti Koopman won the C Grade scratch with a score of 92 and James Long won the D Grade scratch also with a round of 92.

Just 10 birdies on the par threes were scored for the day with Male achieving a double. A final score of net 73 was needed to get a ball down the line.

Next Saturday is the playing of the Paul Wheeler 90th birthday celebration event whilst for everyone else it will be a shotgun stableford event with a tee time of 7.30am sharp. The $10 entry fee for this event also includes lunch on completion.
