Golfers had to deal with some tricky conditions during Saturday’s Par competition with early winds playing havoc in the morning before the afternoon crew made a charge for the 18th hole with stormy conditions closing in.

But the wind, storms, and large-sized field were no match for Glenn Rees (14) who carded the best round of the day to win B Grade with an impressive score of +4.

B Grade golfers clearly stood out on Saturday with left-hander Rob McCrae (18) the only other player to break his handicap, finishing runner-up to Rees with a fine round of +2.

David Mair (10) balanced out his minuses and pluses to perfection, shooting a square round of golf to win A Grade on a countback from Levi Sua (9).

Ross Stewart (23) also finished square with the card to win C Grade by a single shot from Steve Van Ingen (36).

Balls down the line were awarded to Colin Crowle +2, Brian Webster +1, James Dimtsas, Anthony Franzi, Ross Maclean, Neil Atchison 0, and to Brent Greenwood, Chris Wheeler, Barry Williams, Frank Leontini, Shane Wilkinson, Alex Green and Marcus Cameron on -1.

Nearest the pins were won by Jimmy Pari on the second hole and Steve Northcott, who slotted one to within two metres on the 16th.

Northcott’s (19) impressive shot on the 16th on Saturday backed up a fine round of golf of Wednesday where he scored +3 in the Par competition to take out A Grade on a countback from James Dimtas (17).

Frank Leontini (22) gave no-one else a chance in B Grade, scoring a fantastic +5 to win by two shots from an in-form but very unlucky Graeme Steel (29) on +3.

Down the lines went to Graham Brennan +2, Phil Barling, Trevor McQualter and Tony Mafodda on square, while Chris Dalton and Roger Parker snuck onto the DTL list with scores of -1.

Leontini also prevailed in the Back Nine Super Comp, scoring +3, while Phillip Mott on the second and Neville Taylor on the 16th took home prizes for nearest to the pins.

Alex Blanck (19) was the in-form golfer on Sunday, scoring 40 points to win by a whopping eight strokes from second-place finisher Daniel Behnane (13).

Glenn Rees 32, Tom Marshall, Shaun Hegarty and Nick Gray 30 were other players worthy of note.

And a special shout out to 83-year-old Terry Bull (pictured) who is still hitting the ball in fine style in the veteran stage of his career.

Just stop those terrible dad-jokes will you Terry!

GARFIELD

With many golfers taking a four-day break for cup weekend there was plenty of competition options available with many players taking part in more than the one round.

The week kicked off on Monday with a field of 38 presenting with good scores coming in.

Michael Frazee did best for the B Graders with an excellent round of 41 points to defeat Stephen Bird by a clear margin of four points. Steve Kohut Jnr had a great day out by bettering his handicap of seven and getting the A Grade decision on a count back from Elton Shipway with a total of 38 points.

A final score of 33 points or better was required to get a ball down the line.

A field of 55 attended on Cup Day with the overall scoring down on the previous day’s play.

Greg Macklin won the A Grade event with a score of 37 points, defeat David Jarvie by one point.

Paul Kaye got the countback decision for B Grade, defeating Ash Graham with a score of 37 points, while Malcolm Hirt won C Grade, also by a countback, from Harry Huysken, with 35 points.

Speaking of Hirt, he had a great week by also finishing runner up on Thursday, winning a nearest the pin and producing a miracle bogey on the par four fifth hole.

After putting his tee shot in the dam he casually went back and birdied the hole for a score of five for two points. A final score of 33 points was required to get a ball down the line on Cup Day.

On Thursday a field of 53 lined up and it was Richard Perry winning the A Grade event with a good score of 38 points playing off his mark of 11. Perry defeated Garfield’s ‘Mr Unlucky’ Gary Basset by a one-point margin. A bit stiff is Gary as he bettered his handicap of just seven with a score of 37 points.

Speaking of unlucky it was John Blair whom could lay claim to that title by finishing runners up to Don Towan for the B Grade decision with a score of 36 points on Thursday… as well as finishing second on Saturday in B Grade = good play though John.

Peter Lazarus won the C Grade event on a countback with a score of 35 points to defeat the aforementioned Malcolm Hirt. Once again a final score of 33 points was good enough for a ball down the line.

A good size field of 108 turned out on Saturday and it was the prolific Ray James getting the job done for the major grade with a better than handicap score of 38 points to defeat Ray Pund by two points.

Peter Bogart won B Grade with a round of 37 points to defeat the aforementioned John Blair whilst the winning machine that is Peter Fedorenko won the C Grade event on a count back from Clinton Smith with a score of 35 points.

Stephen Bird had the day’s best score with a D Grade-winning tally of 39 points to get the win over Dylan Skinner by one point.

The Gippsland Veterans kick into gear this month with the next event coming up at Moe on November 22. Entries please to our rep John Scale no later than November 18.

The 2021 AGM will be held at the completion of play this Saturday. Details for this event are available on the club’s event notice board. This Saturday is a shot gun start at 8am followed by a club provided lunch and then the 2021 AGM.
