DEEP CREEK

Unseasonal weather and a huge deluge of rain have seen Deep Creek Golf Club unable to host competition play since mid-last week.

Course Superintendent Rick McHugh and his team are doing their utmost to get the course ready for some important upcoming events, including the Club Championships which have been delayed for their original start date of Saturday 20 November.

It seems there have no more than two dry days in a row over the last month making it virtually impossible to have the course in the pristine condition we are normally accustomed to at this time of year.

Hopefully the sun will shine in the coming days and Rick and his team can work their magic.

Deep Creek would like to congratulate former member Doug Amos on having a hole-in-one at Garfield Golf Club last Thursday.

Well done Doug on a great achievement.

Monday last week saw a Team Ambrose Event play out with the winning team of Heath Barclay, Graeme Durran, and husband and wife players Steven and Yvonne Smith having a gross score of 64, nett 56.625 after their 7.375 handicap was deducted.

Runners up were Noel Bonne, Tom McDermott, Tom Reid and Phillip Tunstall who had a gross score of 74…62 nett off a 12 handicap.

Down the lines went to William Carmichael, Stewart MacDonald, Levi Sua and David McMahon (62.125) and James Dimtsas, Jack Hines, Warren Arnott and Chris Kondarios on 63.5.

DROUIN

Heavy rain and the forecast of more to come played havoc with golf competitions at Drouin this week.

No play was possible on Saturday, and Sunday’s scheduled Gerry Butler Drouin Plate was postponed due to the predicted weather and heavy state of the course meaning that ride-on transport was not permitted.

Wednesday’s Par event was also a wash-out, with only six players completing their rounds. Of these six, Brett English’s plus 3 and Jack Henning’s plus one were excellent scores in the conditions.

Next Wednesday and Saturday are both Stableford events.

GARFIELD

Who would have thought that one would require the heater on at this time of the year as we edge closer to summer.

The forecast drenching rains duly arrived on Friday and continued right through until Saturday evening.

Saturday was only for the keenest of players or wet-weather players, depending on your view, and so it proved with a field of just 39 lining up.

Bob Collins played well enough to get the A Grade decision on a countback from Damien Hammond with a score of 36 points, whilst an in-form Stephen Bird won the B Grade event with a score of 34 points to defeat John Hoare by the four points.

A final score of 31 points or better was required to get a ball down the line.

John Blair is in a consistent vein of form as he came in with 33 points as well as the two nearest the pins of which he converted to birdies to go with his two runners up finishes last week.

At the conclusion of the golf the 2021 AGM took place which was attended, Covid safe of course, by an audience of 50 whom had enjoyed a BBQ lunch cooked by Uncle Fester.

Russ Loughridge departs the committee and Bob Calderara comes on board whilst Richard Perry takes over from Ash Graham as treasurer.

A special big thank you to Ash Graham whom originally came on board as treasurer for a three month period and continued in the position for a total of five years.

He led the clubs committee to an outstanding financial position of stability and growth, in fact pre-Covid the club was in its best ever financial position.

If you see Russ Loughridge or Ash out on the course a big thanks would be appreciated by the members.

Now back to the golf, Thursday’s players got the best of the conditions with a field of 57 presenting for the day’s event.

Doug Amos was the week’s big achiever as he scored a hole in one on the par three fourth hole.

Tom Papley swapped his number 11 Sydney Swans jumper for his golf sticks and showed he was equally adept at golf as football by winning the A Grade event with a score of 38 points playing off his mark of 12 to defeat Andrew Rose by two points.

Ian Lidstone broke a long run of outs to win the B grade event with a score of 37 points to defeat Keith Edwards and Don Towan by just one point.

Nigel Goldsworthy got the C Grade decision to also break a long run of outs with a round of 36 points to easily defeat the next best Mick Howsin by some six points.

A final score of 33 points was needed to get a ball down the line.

Next Saturday is the Monthly Medal which is to be played in conjunction with the Medal of Medallists, of which a field of eight players will take part.

The all-conquering Shane Male will start the shortest of favourites for that event. Copies of the 2021 AGM Agenda/ Outcomes are available at the club.
