CARDINIA WATERS BOWLS

Midweek Pennant

Metropolitan Midweek Pennant commenced last Tuesday with Cardinia Waters fielding two teams in that competition for the 2021/22 season.

Both teams, one in division two and the other in division four started the season on a winning note. Also, both won in unusual circumstances, losing on rinks, but winning overall on shots up.

Side one, division two, won at Cranbourne courtesy of the whopping margin that Phil Wynd’s rink recorded. Phil was well supported by Keith Lewis, Ashley Graham and Donny Gibson. Their final score was 34-5 and it reflected in the overall Cardinia Waters victory.

Side two also played against Cranbourne at home.

The game commenced under threatening skies and cool conditions, but the rains stayed away fortunately.

Cardinia Waters were slow away, but got back into the game, and at lunch held a small lead. After lunch the rink of John Moore (skip), Marie Stephenson, Graeme Taylor and Ian Kennedy took control and ended up winning 24/10.

This momentum carried the side to a 56/47 victory.

They now hold second spot on the ladder, and next week play away at Willow Lodge.

An interesting situation occurred in this section, as there were two draws out of the four games played. Maybe close games will be a regular occurrence!

Saturday Pennant

Round two of Saturday Pennant was played and Cardinia Waters recorded a win and a loss.

Side one wandered over to the Pakenham dome to do battle with the mighty Lions, and came home with the honours, as has been customary lately.

Three rinks up and one down and a nine-shot margin at the end gave Cardinia Waters 16 points, and fifth spot on the ladder.

Best winning rink was Keith Lewis, Ashley Graham, Mick Knight and Robert Mitchell, who won by 14 shots.

Next was the rink of John Van Vugt with Bill Hite, Del Dance and Donny Gibson who won by nine shots. The rink of Bryan Stevens, Marion Stevens, Terry Nye and Ian Kennedy hung on for a two shot win.

Next week side one play at home against Narre Warren.

Side two had a battle on their hands against Cheltenham at home.

The teams went toe-to-toe for most of the afternoon, and after Cardinia Waters grabbed the lead late, the visitors came home with a wet sail to win the day by three shots.

Cheltenham took home 12 points and by winning two rinks Cardinia Waters grabbed fours points to add to the eight awarded last week.

Best winning rink was John Moore (skip), Marie Stephenson, Gary Bondfield and Alan Copley who won by six shots.

Tom Gogan’s rink got a big fright from their opponents, winning in the end by only one shot after being 10 shots up during the middle part of their game.

Tom played with Peter Mitchell, Ian Smith and Jenny Cole.

Next week side two plays away against Highett. Side two currently sit in sixth position on the ladder.
