CARDINIA WATERS BOWLS

Midweek Pennant

Both Cardinia Waters midweek teams played against Churchill Waverley Golf Club (CWGC) last week.

Side one travelled to Rowville for its game on the CWCG grass greens, while Side two played at home.

A change in the weather saw cold, blustery and rainy conditions greet the players, and it was worse at Cardinia Waters. Eventually it caused the abandonment of the side two, division four game, and because 45 ends were not played the match was called a draw, and the 16 points available were shared.

Meanwhile at Rowville side one battled on. Early lunch was taken, while the heaviest rain fell.

After the break the players managed to finish their game, ending with a complete win to Cardinia Waters.

Phil Wynd, Ashley Graham, Jim Barrie and Donny Gibson were the best performing rink with a comprehensive 25-13 victory. They were in command early to lead all the game.

The rink of Bryan Stevens, Bill Hite, John Moore and Terry Nye also performed well keeping their opponents at bay, and winning 23-13.

Just sneaking in by a single shot was the team of Keith Lewis, Dennis Patmore, Gary Bondfield and Simon Koning. They led most of the game, but received a fright from their opponents near the end.

Next week side one play Narre Warren at home. They sit fourth on the ladder, however only seven points separate the top four teams. This should lead to close games, and an interesting ladder.

The side two team are grimly hanging on to top spot, and next week play Dandenong RSL Rec, at Keysborough.

Saturday Pennant

Cardinia Waters side one travelled to Hampton Park for an important game on Saturday.

The two teams were very close on the ladder before this game, and the winner would stake a spot in the four.

True to form the game was intense and hard fought, with the Redbacks winning overall by 11 shots and three rinks up.

At the break Hampton Park held a 15-shot lead over the visitors. The second half was a struggle for both sides with Hampton Park hanging on grimly for the win.

Cardinia Waters had only one winning rink, with Brian Stevens, Marion Stevens, John Moore and Gary Bondfield getting their heads in front after afternoon tea to win by seven shots. Buoyed by a six and two fours, they held out their talented opponents.

The two points could prove to be valuable later in the season for Cardinia Waters who this Saturday take on Cranbourne away, in the last game before the Christmas break.

Back on their home green Cardinia Waters side two had an important win against Mordialloc. Getting up by just three shots they took 14 points out of the game to keep down third spot on the ladder.

Cardinia Waters had two winning teams both getting up by four shots. One was Tom Gogan, Michele Bondfield, Peter Mitchell and Brian Byrne. The other winning team was Stuart Tokely, John Carr, Jim Smith and Alan Copley.

Side two are in third spot in this section, and the top four appear quite settled, however only nine points separate first and fourth. Next Saturday side two play Cranbourne at home.
