A tough task for the Demons

KOOWEERUP OVER 60’s

Sunday 30 January was the date for round nine of over 60’s cricket between Kooweerup and the Australian Cricket Society (ACS) at the Kooweerup Cricket Ground.

Demons’ skipper Graham Davey won the toss for the second time in two games and this time he decided to bat first.

Again Kooweerup was off to a disastrous start and by the third over were two wickets for three runs. The captain, Davey, running out Brett Carey for a second ball duck and Jack Ingram 1 (4) bowled by Neil Smith.

Davey 16 (37) and David Leach 15 (34) both retired before the 18th over, when Bob Phillips 0 (3) was caught by Peter Glenton off the bowling of David Long.

The score was 3/42, but two runs later Ron Wernke 5 (24) was bowled by Terry Allinson.

In the 23rd over, with the score on 51, Kooweerup lost its fifth wicket when Ron Milnes 1 (13) was run out. Jeff Ramage 5 (25) retired before the first game player; Tim Jeffries 1 (3) was caught by Peter Glenton off the bowling of Terry Sanderson. Ross Farmer 12 (26) and Bruce Potts 5 (26) both retired before the Demons lost two wickets with the score on 74 in the 34th over, both batsmen were bowled by Peter Robinson…Jim Gregory 1 (3) and John Moore 0 (2).

Davey returned and added five runs off 20 balls before he was stumped by Peter Glenton off the bowling of David Long. After 40 overs the Kooweerup total had progressed to 9/92 with David Leach 24 (47) and Jeff Ramage 7 (28) both not out.

All ACS bowlers bowled exceptionally well: Peter Robinson 6-2/10, David Long 7-2/15, Terry Allinson 6-1/4, Terry Sanderson 4-1/8, Neil Smith 7-1/24, Neville Brown 8-0/22, John Smith 2-0/5.

ACS got off to a slow start, only scoring 23 off the first nine overs before Ian Gibson was stumped by Jack Ingram off the bowling of Brett Carey. By the 20th over ACS were 1/54, with Terry Allinson 6 (33) and Stuart Stockdale 12 (27) both retiring.

In the next 12 overs ACS scored at four runs an over without losing another wicket. Terry Allanson 18 (28) and Ken Penaluna 14 (35) retired and Terry Robinson 17 (15) and Neville Brown 6 (8) were both not out. This was the end of the game as the ACS score was 1 for 103.

Kooweerup’s bowlers tried hard: Brett Carey 7-1/28, Bob Phillips 6-0/11, Graham Davey 8-0/27, Jim Gregory 3-0/5, David Leach 4-0/13, Ron Wernke 2-0/5, Ron Milnes 1-0/3 and Ross Farmer 1-0/11.

Although Kooweerup was defeated by a better ACS team, the visitors had to struggle to post a winning score. Next Sunday Kooweerup plays Mornington on the Mornington Ground.
