GARFIELD GOLF

There was splendid weather all week with just a sprinkle of moisture around on Friday and – with plenty of golf available all week – there was no reason not to get out on the course.

Saturday was the playing of the annual Top Town team event which was played as a stableford foursome aggregate event – with the four scores all added together – and was contested by 29 teams. The winning team with a total of 146 points was Tina Cowie 36, John Hoare 37, Ian Hopper 34 and Steve Kohut Snr – the star of the team with a nice round of 39 points.

Runner up with a score of 142 points was the team made up of Glenn Whelan 30, Marty Atkins 35, Bob Calderara 37 and their star Dave Lawler with a great round of 40 points.

The day was a huge success with plenty in attendance, music being played, and all gathering around for a nice BBQ lunch which gave our long-time servant Kevin Whitmore a huge retirement day.

The other huge event for the week, and the first of what is going to become an annual event, was the Seniors Two Person stableford aggregate competition being played on Friday with a great field of 80 players fronting the starter for a 9am shot-gun start.

All in all, it was a very enjoyable day with golfers in attendance from the surrounding districts and with excellent trophies on offer for the three prize winners.

A great lunch, with tasty sides provided by Garfield’s Country Style Meats, was also provided.

One pair received its entry fee back via a raffle, plus numerous other raffles, nearest the pins and longest drives prizes were on offer for just $30 per person.

The value received by each contestant was of the highest quality and with the weather being reasonably kind it all added up to a successful day.

The pairing of John Hoare and Tina Cowie made it a week to remember by being defeated via a count back decision by P. Rodwell and G. Moreland with a score of 77 points, with other results listed below. The next veteran event is West Gippsland v South Gippsland at Warragul on 28 February for a 9.30am shot-gun start.

John requires all entries in now or put them on the sheet in the men’s wash room.

With many workers (those that actually pay tax) returning to the nine-to-five grind, Thursday fields are returning to their average size of around 60 players.

This week attracted a field of 56 which meant three grades were up for decision.

Mark Robertson got the A Grade decision with a round of 41 points, playing off his mark of 13, to defeat club champ Shane Male who scored an excellent round of 40 points playing off his mark of just two. Liam McMahon won the B Grade event on a count back from Gary Vitiritti with a score of 38 points, whilst our D Grade club champ Mick Howsin, having a good run, won the C Grade event from George Gray with a great score of 41 points. A final score of 35 points or better was required to get a ball down the line.

Coming Up

Next Saturday is a game of single stableford with bookings only available up until 10.30am on account of the playing of the 2022 Top Gun Final which will commence shortly thereafter at 11am.
