Deep Creek championships up for grabs

In direct contrast to last week’s very strong winds, beautifully still conditions greeted golfers at the Deep Creek Golf Club for round two of the rescheduled 2021 Club Championships on Saturday.

Despite the still conditions scoring was still difficult with only four players managing to better their handicaps off the dreaded blue markers.

The best score of the day was handed in by Dave Nagel (7), who carded a nett 70 to win the A Grade competition by two shots from Nick Gray (7) who fired a nett 72.

Jarrod Leontini (15) played exactly to his handicap, with a nett 72 good enough to win the B Grade competition by a single shot from Frank Leontini (21).

Michael Banger (26) and Anthony Kemsley (24) had a great battle in C Grade, both scoring one-under par rounds of nett 71, with Banger winning on a countback.

Down the lines on Saturday went to Duncan Campbell 71, Glenn Rees, Peter Reilly and David Mair 72, Gary Clymo and Jarred Bester 73, Yvonne Smith, Andrew Hale, Phillip Barling, Brodey Fitzgerald and Bob Naismith 74, and Rod Walker, Neville Taylor and John Pattison with nett 75.

Nearest the pin went to Rob Nobelius on the second (1.15m).

A Grade

Stroke: Dave Nagel 161, Nick Gray 167, Harry Elyasie 168, David Mair 173 and Glenn Rees 175.

B Grade

Stroke: Mick Boyd 181, Colin Maclean 182, Scott Irwin 183, Rob Nobelius 184, Leigh Cullen 185, Steve Smith 185.

Handicap: Mick Boyd 151, Colin Maclean 154, Leigh Cullen 154, Scott Irwin 157, Rob Nobelius 158, Steve Smith 159.

C Grade

Stroke: Gary Clymo 196, Anthony Kemsley 203, Duncan Campbell 205, Michael Banger 205, Brenton Hollingworth 207.

Handicap: Duncan Campbell 147, Gary Clymo 148, Michael Banger 153, Anthony Kemsley and Brenton Hollingworth 155.

Round two of the Mid-Week Club Championships took place on Wednesday with Heath Barclay (9) winning the A Grade event with a nett 69, from runner-up Rob Nobelius (12) with a nett 70.

John Kingman (20) also won by a shot, securing B Grade with a nett 71 to finish one clear of Rex Ryan (21) with a score of 72.

Down the lines went to Noel Boyd, Steven Smith, Ron Seamer and David Calderbank with 72, Tony Gray and Les Jones 73, and to John Pattison, Michael Banger, Stephen Northcott, Tony Penney 74, Ronald Zomer, Frank Leontini and Harry Bolotin on 74.

The Supercomp Back 9 winner was Rex Ryan with a nett 33.

Nearest the pins went to: 2nd Hole: Rod Beard (3m) and 16th Hole: Les Jones (2.82m).

Mid-Week Championship Leaders after Round 2

A Grade: Harry Elyasie 160, Heath Barclay 164, Frankie Chiu 167.

B Grade: John Pattison 178, John Curtin 179, Andrew Hale 183.

C Grade: Michael Banger 204, Ron Zomer 210, Alex Green 213.

The ladies were out in force for round two the Club Championship on Thursday with Shirley McGrath (29) braving the tough conditions best to card a nett 75 to win by two strokes from Yvonne Barrot (28).

Suzanne Van Strien (9) scored 34 points to win the stableford event, to clear of Yvonne Smith (19) on 32 points.

Down the lines went to Kay Jones 78 and Carol Beard 79 in the stroke event, and to Norma Crebbin, Liz Garvey and Helen Aurish with 31 points in the stableford competition.

Suzanne Van Strien had a birdie on the second to win the nearest the pin second shot on that hole.

Mick Boyd (14) currently leads the way in the B Grade Club Championships and showed that form was no fluke by winning Monday’s A Grade event with a great score of 39 points. Runner up was Tony Sheahan (15) with 38, while Phillip Tunstall (23) had a best-of-the-week 41 points to win B Grade by five shots from Dave Lummis (29).

Down the lines went to Rex Ryan 35, and to Stewart MacDonald, Harry Bolotin, Bobby Edwards, Chris Dalton, John Piggott and John Pattison with 34 points.

Nearest the pins went to: 2nd Hole: Graeme Steel (1.92m) and 16th Hole: Roger Parker (2.39m).

Sunday’s stableford event rounded out the week at Deep Creek with Heath Barclay (8) scoring 37 points to secure a one-shot win over Andrew Hale (17).

Down the lines went to Nick Gray 35 and to Harry Elyasie and Shaun Hegarty with 34 points.
