DEEP CREEK GOLF

The first Saturday of Spring proved to be a great day for Grant Wilson who relished the improving conditions at Deep Creek Golf Club to card a fantastic score of 43 points.

Wilson’s magnificent round of golf equates to a fine round of 81 off the stick, which is fantastic scoring on a par-72 golf course playing every inch of its length.

Wilson can most certainly kiss his 16-handicap goodbye after Saturday’s impressive victory!

Wilson needed to be at the top of his game however, because hot on his heels was long-time member Robin McCrae (18) who signed off on an impressive score of 40 points.

The crafty left-hander was unlucky not to win, finishing three shots adrift of Wilson but the same margin clear of the rest of the chasing pack.

Winning balls down the line were Scott Irwin 37, Stephen Northcott 35, David Mair and Lyriq Bester 34, Glenn Rees 33 and Ron Nobelius and Geoff Percival 32.

Anthony Franzi had his irons dialled in, winning both nearest the pins on the second (1.45m) and 16th (.90m) holes.

The aforementioned Northcott (21) had a sensational week with the sticks in hand, scoring 38 points to win Monday’s stableford competition by a Tiger Woods-like five shots.

Ron Seamer (18) and Rob Nobelius finished level on 33 points, with Seamer taking home the runners-up cheque via a countback.

Joining Nobelius on the list of down the line winners were Chris Dalton 32, Bobby Edwards 31, Noel Boyd, Lyriq Bester, Michael Banger and John Curtin 30, and Noel Bonne, Tony Vallance and Tony Sheahan with 28 points.

Nearest The Pins: 2nd: Pat Ellerton (8.0m) and 16th: Michael Banger (1.80m).

Wednesday’s stableford competition saw Heath Barclay (9) score a comfortable two-shot victory, carding 37 points to win by two shots from the in-form but unlucky Seamer (18) – who was runner up for the second time in three days.

Down the lines went to Noel Boyd and Levi Sua 33, and Stuart Cooper and Tony Sheahan 32.

Seamer can console himself after winning the SuperComp Back 9 with 20 points.

Sua won the nearest the pin hitting it to three metres on the 16th.

And Barclay continued his impressive form by taking out Sunday’s stableford event with a score of 33 points.

The chilly conditions couldn’t stop Barclay, who finished three clear of Dean Van Nugteren, Steely Mateariki and Brian Bateup on 30 points.

Stableford competitions will be played right across the board in this week’s golfing fixture.
