Cold, raining…but worse yet to come

GARFIELD BOWLS

The only pennant played this week was not a pleasant day for Garfield.

On Tuesday 15 November, Garfield’s Midweek side visited Drouin for a second v third ladder clash.

The day was cold and rainy with even some hail, but worse yet was the result with Garfield losing overall by 50 shots to 78.

Maureen Lamport’s rink, consisting of Jan Johnson, Malcolm Newham and Bob Lamport, were never in the game as their opponents stormed away from the beginning, giving little chance for Garfield to make any headway.

The team lost by 14 shots to 34.

Cheryl Breteler, Gerry Wakefield, Lexi Taylor and skip Helene Newton were down by six shots after three ends, and, while they kept pace after that, they weren’t able to bridge the gap, losing by 18 shots to 23.

The match on the rink of Margaret Hyam, Gillian Harper, Damian Brick and skip Gwen Fabris, was a much closer affair all day.

After four ends, Drouin led by eight shots, but after seven ends, it was all-square at eight shots each.

From then on, the scores were close all day, tied twice more, before Garfield led by one shot going into the last end.

However, Drouin scored four on that last end, inflicting a loss to Garfield by 18 shots to 21.

This loss has dropped Garfield to fifth on the ladder, and with no game next Tuesday, that’s where they’ll stay for the moment.

There were no Saturday bowls played this week due to the Victoria Open being played in Shepparton.
