Cora Lynn has announced itself as the big improver of WGFNC netball in 2024 after the Cobras claimed a first-ever A grade victory over Tooradin-Dalmore at Cora Lynn on Saturday night.
The Cobras pushed reigning champions Inverloch-Kongwak in the season-opener on 30 March, with that 44-34 scoreline now looking a very impressive form-line.
The Cobras won 49-41 on Saturday; a win which was built on a dominant second-quarter performance.
Cora Lynn led 13-10 at quarter time, but took control of the contest with a 16-8 second term.
Gemma Stacey (GS) and Brooke Abu-Jaber (GA) provided great targets in the circle, while Danielle Cameron (GK) and Annabel Sheppard (GD) did a wonderful job of nullifying the supreme talents of Alex Maher (GS) at the opposite end of the court.
The Cobras were also sharp and fast through the midcourt, with Lexis Schade (C), Paige Brooks-MacMIllan (WD) and Alannah and Ellie Keen (WA) taking it right up to one of the best teams in the business.
The Seagulls fought hard, cutting the margin from 11 to eight at the final whistle; but the damage had already been done.
Garfield is also off to a flying start in 2024 after overcoming a sluggish start to win 48-38 over Bunyip.
The Stars trailed 14-8 at quarter time, but took a one-goal lead to half time after an impressive 15-8 second quarter.
Garfield won the last two quarters comfortably, to sail clear for victory.
Ash Bowden was moved from Goal Defence to Centre at quarter time, with that move paying dividends, while Tyla Redwood (GS) and Georgia Coleman (GA) were impressive under the ring for the Stars.
Keely Wright (GK) and Ally Johnson (WD) were terrific performers for the Bulldogs.
Dalyston looks set to be a major contender this season after the Magpies scored a 60-42 victory over Kooweerup.
The Magpies were well served by Goal Shooter Jarney Thomas, who scored 47 of the 60 goals, while Ruby Brosnan (C), Sophie Scott (WD) and Eva Garnham (WA) saw a stack of the ball through the midcourt.
Kooweerup was brave in defeat, especially in the second half, with Alix Galante (C), Kate Sidebottom (GA) and Talia Charalambides (GD) leading the way.
Kilcunda-Bass has started its season off well with a 51-37 win over Korumburra-Bena.
The Panthers trailed at quarter time but produced a 13-6 second quarter to take control of the contest.
Kasey Gambetta (WD) and Grace Rand (WA) were two of the Panthers better performers on the day.
In other games this week, a sparkling 46 goals from Kyra Esler (GS) has led Nar Nar Goon to a thrilling 57-56 victory over Phillip Island.
With Darcy Utber and Steph Lee providing some crisp passing, Esler nailed some crucial on the run-home to guide the Goon to victory.
Lily Mewett (GS), Lexi Walton (C) and Christie Edwards (GA) were solid in defeat for the Bulldogs.
And Inverloch-Kongwak found little trouble in a 71-32 win over Warragul Industrials.
Amy Scott (GS) was in great form under the ring for the Sea Eagles, while Jess Wyatt (GS) and Brooke Weatherhead (C) fought the game out well for the Dusties.
