GARFIELD GOLF

Thursday’s Anzac Day public holiday started out cold and wet but the showers cleared late morning into a mild afternoon which saw a great size field of 119 players take part in the stableford competition.

It looks like Garfield has a rising young star in Liam Hill, who played to a mark of just five; an impressive five shots better than his handicap to get the A Grade win with a nice round of 41 points.

Hill then came out on Saturday and paired up with Mansoor Ahmad to finish runners up in the American Foursomes event with a total of 63.8.

Jack Henning, a regular visitor from Drouin, can consider himself very stiff to get beaten on Thursday with a score of 41 points – with a one over par round of 70 – five shots to the better of his mark of just six.

Dave Lawler, a recent 2024 Medal winner, posted a round of 40 points to finish in third position.

Cody Fry won the B Grade event by a countback from Allan Milkins with a score of 38 points whilst Ross Underwood won the C Grade event with a signed-for card of 40 points.

A final countback score of 34 points or better was required to finish in the money and was achieved by some 22 players.

Steely Mateariki scored a magnificent eagle two on the par four second to go with his par round of 36 points playing off a single figure of six.

A total of 19 birdies were scored for the day on the par threes with the 11th giving up six of those.

On Saturday, a simply magnificent autumn day weather wise saw a field of 59 pairs line up for the Foursomes event.

Best in was the combination of Shane Male, in great touch, and Matt McCormick with a score of 63.5; a smidgin to the better of the aforementioned Hill and Ahmad.

Greg Needham teamed up with Damian Needham to finish third with a score of 66.2.

A final score of 71.3 or better was the number to finish in the money.

Tym Davey scored a pair of nearest the pins on the 8th and 16th holes.

Jeanette Mitchell, in good touch, won Tuesday’s ladies stableford event with a round of 37 points as well as scoring a pair of nearest the pins on the 4th and 13th holes and was able to covert one of those.

On Monday a field of 58 attended with Nick Hoghton having the week’s best result getting the A Grade win with a huge score of 43 points, six points clear of the next best in Richard Perry.

The 84-year-old veteran Geoff Roberts can accept the B Grade win with a miserly score of just 34 points; one point in advance of Glenn Charles.

A final score of 33 points or better was required to win a ball down the line.

Heath Barclay scored a pair of nearest the pins on the 4th and 16th holes.

The Veterans travelled east to Traralgon on Monday 22 April with a field of 88 registering for play.

There was finally a win for the locals with Garfield member Darryl O’Grady winning the C Grade event by a countback with a round of 40 points.

The course presented very well but the greens were quite different to the practice green.

The meal served was very well received which was pleasing.

The next Veterans event is at Moe on Monday 13 May via a 9am shotgun start; names to John Scale by 9 May please.

This Saturday is the May Monthly Medal.
