Sudden death

The Homicide Squad's Detective Senior Sergeant Shane O’Connell addresses the media.

POLICE have found that the death of a 20-year-old man in the middle of a Pakenham street on Tuesday night was not suspicious.
On Wednesday morning, Homicide Squad detectives were piecing together the last movements of the man who was found by a passer-by about 10pm on Tuesday.
Police and ambulance officers were called to Kosta Boda Boulevard in the Fallingwater estate off Irving Road after a motorist found him lying in the middle of the road.
By Wednesday afternoon, investigators had received the results from the post mortem and the Homicide Squad had bowed out of the investigation and ruled out any foul play.
Homicide Squad Detective Senior Sergeant Shane O’Connell said earlier in the day that ambulance officers had administered CPR for a considerable time before the man died at the scene.
He said he could not expand on the man’s injuries or who else may have been at the scene.
“A post-mortem will be carried out to determine the cause of death and the investigation will progress from there,” he told the gathered media at 7.50am.
Det Sen Sgt O’Connell said the man was from the Pakenham area, but was not a resident of that street.
He said it was not likely the man had been hit by a car.
“At this stage it is a mystery to us how a young 20-year-old male was found in the middle of a suburban street,” he said.
Police spent the morning canvassing neighbours before calling off the investigation later in the day.
Police will now prepare a report for the Coroner.
