HISTORY will be made this Sunday when the Pakenham Racing Club hosts the $100,000 Bruce Clough Mazda Pakenham Cup (2000m), the first cup to be run at its new home, Racing.com Park at Tynong.
A huge crowd, set to rival the 6500 people who turned out to watch Ripplebrook win the 1975 edition of the race, is expected to flock to Tynong to see if more local names can be added to the club’s most prestigious honour roll.
From Kanuri (1937) to Coroner (1979/80), Telopia (1982) to Fendalton (1989) and from Karawin (1990) to last year’s winner Captain Fancypantz (2014), local trainers, jockeys and connections have always thrived on the biggest stage that the PRC has to offer.
For the first time run over the classic distance of 2000 metres, the club’s marquee event is the first of two cups to be run this year, the second on Sunday 29 November will be the first in the cup’s new timeslot at the end of the spring carnival.
A free courtesy bus from the Cardinia Club, and Pakenham and Tynong train stations, will run to the main entrance at Racing.com Park.
