Buyers compete in rising market

There were approximately 650 export and 750 young cattle penned at VLE Pakenham, representing an increase of 540 head week-on-week.
There was a full field of buyers present and competing in a dearer market.
Quality remained wintry although there was a better selection of grain assisted cattle suited to the trade on offer.
The vealers sold 10 cents to 20 cents dearer with only a handful of calves suited to butcher orders.
Yearling trade steers improved seven cents to 12 cents while the heifers suited to the trade gained five cents to nine cents per kilogram.
Processor competition for young cattle was solidly underpinned by demand from lot feeders, especially for heavier young Angus steers.
Grown steers and bullocks sold up to seven cents per kilogram dearer with a larger proportion of the draft lacking finish.
Heavy weight grown heifers showing good finish lifted nine cents per kilogram.
Heavy weight Friesian manufacturing steers improved six cents while the crossbred portion gained 15 cents per kilogram.
The vealers sold mostly from 260 cents to 320 cents per kilogram.
Yearling trade steers made between 280 cents and 334 cents per kilogram.
Yearling heifers suited to the trade sold between 246 cents and 329 cents per kilogram.
Feeder steers made from 250 cents to 298 cents with the heifer portion from 232 cents to 278 cents per kilogram.
Grown steers sold from 280 cents to 320 cents per kilogram.
Bullocks made between 290 cents and 323 cents per kilogram.
Heavy weight grown heifers showing good finish sold between 240 cents and 306 cents per kilogram.
Heavy weight Friesian manufacturing steers made from 226 cents to 245 cents with the crossbred portion from 235 cents and 293 cents per kilogram.
