EASILY mistaken for Saint Nick’s toy workshop, the Bunarong Men’s Shed has now received a gift of its own.
The place for men to talk, build and socialise with like-minded blokes has received a $10,000 boost from international developer, Lend Lease, which will go towards a warmer working environment.
The Men’s Shed, located at the Meadowvale Retirement Village has been carving out children’s rocking horses, wooden blocks, cars and trikes for families in need since 2013 and village manager Janet Fisher said the shed was an invaluable addition to the community.
“They are an external group to the retirement village but do a number of jobs for the residents, Ms Fisher said.
The $10,000 donation from the Lend Lease community grants foundation will go towards putting up a ceiling in the shed.
“It will greatly improve the men’s shed and keep it warmer in the cooler months, making the environment that bit more comfortable for the men,” she said.
The shed of about 30 men meets each Wednesday for morning tea, lunch and a barbecue once a month – in between their sawing, sanding and glueing.
Ms Fisher says give men a shed, and they’ll talk.
“Men don’t talk much with each other but they’ll talk in the shed,” she laughed.
Providing much-needed items to hospitals, charities and schools, Ms Fisher said the group was a wonderful asset to have on-site.
“It’s an endless list of what they do and they make toys to sell at the village fete each year – the shed is about comradeship and fun and they were delighted to receive this grant,” she said.
