KOOWEERUP will light up next Thursday, raising money for the Leukaemia Foundation.
Hundreds are predicted at the 2.2km walk across Kooweerup on Thursday 10 September.
Lanterns will be available to purchase on the night for $15. Gold, white and blue lanterns can be purchased, to remember a loved one, one’s own blood cancer journey and to show care, respectively.
Katrina Humphrey, one of the organisers of the event, said participants could purchase lanterns for $15 on the night or register online to be sponsored.
“People with at least $15 from donations get a free lantern on the night,” she said.
There will be a barbecue with sausages and refreshments provided by the Kooweerup Lions Club, and the Kooweerup Men’s Shed will be in attendance.
Money raised will fund leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma research, and provide emotional and practical support for battlers and their friends and family.
“Last year, we made just over $2000, primarily from the lanterns and donations,” Ms Humphrey said.
“We had about 100 come. This year we’re hoping 150-200, hopefully more.”
Light the Night at Kooweerup is in its second year, after the group’s youngest leader Chris Burhop lost his fight against leukaemia in June last year. His family participates in the twilight walk every year in Melbourne.
Every day, 34 Australians are diagnosed with blood cancer.
