Pets know who’s the boss

Buttons and Jex have formed an unlikely friendship.

A BUNNY, a budgie and a border collie seem an unlikely trio.
But together they rule the roost at Lisa Maree Quaife’s Drouin home.
She brought home a six-week-old Buttons the rabbit almost six years ago.
“He’s an indoor rabbit so he lives in my house full-time,” she said.
“He chews on my curtains so I have to put my couch in front of my window.
“He doesn’t chew on any of the actual furniture.
“He sheds a lot of hair so I have rabbit tumbleweeds floating around my house!”
Buttons is a dwarf lop but thinks he’s a dog.
“I don’t think he realises that he is the prey, because he’s always lived inside and I’ve always picked him up. He doesn’t have any fear,” Lisa said.
Jax the border collie puppy moved in nine months ago.
“He’s a bit of a terror. I have to teach him that the rabbit is a friend,” Lisa said.
“Being a border collie, every time Buttons runs he’ll chase him.
“He licks him.
“Buttons loves it. He’ll just sit there and let Jax lick him and nudge him around. He thinks he’s getting patted so he enjoys the attention.”
When Buttons has had enough attention he hops into the laundry.
“Jax knows he’s not allowed to go in the laundry,” Lisa said.
“Jax will sit outside the door and watch him.”
Lisa has recently introduced budgerigar Cougar into the mix.
“I found him on the road with my boyfriend,” she said.
“We had to pull over and pick him up.
“He likes the rabbit. If I let him out of the cage he lands on the ground and walks over to buttons.
“Jax will chase him. I can’t have them in the house the same time.
“It keeps me busy.”
