Road strategy input sought

CARDINIA Shire Council is seeking ideas from residents on how to make Cardinia roads safer after releasing its Road Safety Strategy 2016-’25 draft.
The council has called for community feedback to the strategy which aims to reduce deaths and injuries on local roads.
It identifies a number of priorities including the safety for young families, road users aged over 50 years old, vulnerable road users, safe roads infrastructure, and risky behaviour such as speed, drink and drug driving, fatigue and distractions.
Cardinia shire mayor Jodie Owen said the strategy would guide the council’s road safety activities for the next 10 years.
“Road fatalities and serious injuries in Cardinia shire have reduced by 19 per cent since 2005, but there are still far too many serious accidents,” Ms Owen said.
“Council’s International Safe Community survey last year showed road traffic incidents rated among the top three safety issues among all age groups and the third highest safety and injury concern of residents overall. This just shows how important road safety is to our community.
“The draft strategy will outline the areas where we can work to lower road trauma in Cardinia shire”
To provide feedback on the Road Safety Strategy, email a submission to mail@cardinia.vic.gov.au by 15 July. Alternatively, phone 1300 787 624 by the due date.
