MORE than 100 people were evacuated from Pakenham Central Marketplace when a car parked below the centre caught fire.
Emergency services were called to the scene at about 2.20pm on Thursday.
The car fire set off Pakenham Central’s fire alarm and the centre was immediately evacuated, with the underground car park closed off.
This left many shoppers who had parked in the underground car park unable to get to their cars.
Four CFA trucks were called to the scene and brought the fire under control by 2.50pm.
Paramedics assessed one person at the scene found to be in a stable condition and they were not required to be taken to hospital.
An image posted by a resident on social media showed the car’s bonnet lifted, with bystanders inspecting the damage.
Police said their records did not indicate the circumstances of the fire were suspicious.
