Smaller market as demand settles

LAST week’s Wednesday Baw Baw Livestock Exchange fat sale saw fewer head yarded for a sale that was back slightly in all categories as demand starts to settle.
Only two bullocks were yarded on the day, heifer numbers were down by 13 head and again missing re-stockers proved costly with the per head price back $100.
Steers sold to the best demand with feedlots prominent, and vealer numbers were marginally up.
With the easier demand and quality prices slipped back in the cents per kilo range but heavier weights saw vealers finish the sale only back $20 per head.
The week’s yard average was six cents easier at 333.2 cents, 27 heifers topped at 350 cents, back 49 cents, and averaged 297.3 cents, back 13 cents.
Twenty six steers topped at 364.2 cents, back 35 cents, and averaged 327 cents, back nine cents, and 118 veal topped at 405 cents, back 25 cents, and averaged 353.4 cents, back 14 cents.
On Thursday demand again proved to be the difference, with a larger yarding than the previous week.
A total of 537 head were on offer, 33 bulls made to a top of 299.6 cents, back 25 cents, with an average of 258 cents, back 19 cents, 488 cows reached a top of 335.6 cents, but this was short lived as the next top was back to 299.6 cents, six cents up on last week.
Cows averaged 17 cents easier at 213.3 cents with a yard average of 217.5 cents. The sale was 18 cents easier.
The draw for 26 and 27 October is: 1, Elders; 2, Scotts; 3, SEJ; 4, Landmark; 5, Gibbon.
