The law of averages

The cast of Newton's Law.

Newton’s Law, ABC,
Thursdays, 8.30pm (from 9 February)

Claudia Karvan, queen of the Australian small screen (shhh, don’t tell Asher Keddie) returns from a stint behind the scenes with a new eight-part drama series, Newton’s Law, launching on the ABC on 9 February.
Karvan stars as Josephine, a solicitor whose low-flying practice is burned down by a disgruntled client – which may end up being a good thing – maybe.
She is persuaded by old uni friend and not-so-secret admirer, Lewis Hughes (Toby Schmitz) to trade the benefits of her brilliant mind for a berth in the lofty glamour of Knox Chambers.
And so with her office destroyed, her marriage collapsing thanks to her husband’s globe-trotting (Brett Tucker) and motherhood fast losing its charm as her 15-year-old becomes, well, a 15-year-old, Josephine decides it’s time to take her own aspirations off the back-burner and resume her barrister’s robes.
If only it were that easy to leave her old life behind.
This one comes from the team behind Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries and stars Claudia Karvan, Toby Schmitz, Georgina Naidu, Sean Keenan, Brett Tucker, Miranda Tapsell, Andrew McFarlane and Jane Hall.
This is a look at upstairs and downstairs in the legal profession and while it has the pedigree to be something special, it seems to be taking a while to settle in. But this has Deb Cox at the helm behind the camera and Claudia Karvan in front, so it has to end up being something worth watching – right?
