A Nar Nar Goon student has won a secondary school art competition for a piece she completed in Grade 6.
Twelve-year-old Scarlett Daly won the Ficifolia Art Show at Drouin Football Club earlier this month for her piece ‘Shanti’.
Beating out students years older, Scarlett’s portrait of a Hindu woman created with blue ink and watercolours was commended by judges for its “accomplished use” of art mediums, with one judge telling her they had never come across anyone her age with such talent.
It was the first competition the up-and-coming artist had competed in and Scarlett’s mother Leanne said the family was scratching its head trying to work out where she got her talent from.
“We’re trying to figure it out, we just don’t know,” Ms Daly said.
“No-one here’s got any artistic talent.”
Scarlett said it came with a lot of practice.
Each day after school she spends hours on end at her easel sketching or experimenting with charcoal and water colours.
At a recent school camp she also spent the entire bus ride sketching in her pad.
She finds her inspiration in books and photographs, but also likes to create from her imagination.
Scarlett said she’d like to pursue art as a career in the future, but for now is enjoying finding her style.
“I find art enjoyable and relaxing because it doesn’t matter how it turns out, you’ve still made something,” she said.
“At the moment I just like having fun.”
