No bail: Bar the answer

Day 48/365

By Cam Lucadou-Wells

A defence lawyer felt aggrieved after losing a particularly optimistic bail application at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 27 February.
After his client was led back to the police cells, the lawyer told the judge he felt he was “kicking into a four-goal breeze at both ends”.
“That’s what the Bar is for,” he quipped – after lamenting being assigned the challenging brief.
He added that included both meanings of the ‘bar’ – presumably being a barrister who can pick and choose their cases, as well as making a therapeutic visit to the “bar down the road”.
