IT truly was a ‘Super Saturday’ in the EDFL in Round 7 as Kooweerup and Cora Lynn recorded memorable wins over two of the other flag fancies, Bunyip and the Warragul Industrials.

The Demons proved they’re the real deal with an impressive 11-point win at home over Bunyip in a pressure-filled clash of the previously unbeaten sides.

Player-coach Ben Collins preached teamwork, unselfishness and relentless pressure in the rooms prior to the game and his side displayed all three in spades in the final quarter.

With his side trailing by four points at three-quarter time, Demons non-playing assistant coach Matt Cox put the acid on his boys to respond.

“They’re not going to stop!” he said, eyeballing the players in the huddle.

“Are we a good side, or are we just front-runners?”
The likes of Daniel Calteri (against gun centre-half back Nathan Lieshout), David Collins, Ben Kerrigan, and the super-composed Ben Miller gave him the answer he was looking for.

In the night game, the Dusties had their best shot at beating Cora Lynn for the first time in more than six years at Bunyip River Road.

But, despite half-a-dozen forced changes to their side from its last game, Cobras leaders Ricky Clark and player-coach David Main were nothing short of inspiring in a thrilling two-point win.

In clashes with Tye Holland and Shane Brewster – two of the EDFL’s modern day midfield greats – versatile Cobra on-baller Brady White was superb, while Nathan Gillis’ footskills belied the wet, muddy conditions.

For the Dusties, it was fittingly Brewster who led from the front in a clash that could so easily have gone the other way.
