Worth the wait: Woolies

THE long awaited construction of the Woolworths complex in Pakenham will begin in the next four to six weeks.
But the council is not holding its breath.
Despite a Woolworths spoke-sman confirming last week construction is expected to start within six weeks, Business Development Officer at Cardinia Shire Council, Phil Jackson, says he is unsure when work will start.
He told the Pakenham Business Group on Monday night, he was told works would start by the end of June, but said he was told the same thing in November and December.
“There are many conditions on the permit which Woolworths must meet before they start construction. This includes a plan submitted about where workers will park their cars during the works,” Mr Jackson said. It took three weeks for the Gazette to get an answer from Woolworths.
“We have appointed a builder and are looking at starting construction in the next four to six weeks,” the spokesman said.
“We are working with the council to get construction started as quickly as we can.” The development should be completed by late 2011.
