There has been an interesting twist to the tale of a charity initiative involving a possum and Beaconhills College Year 8 students.

During wood technology classes last week, the Berwick campus students started making possum boxes.

But it seemed one of the future homeowners was keen to do an early inspection.

On Thursday morning, technology staffed arrived at school to find a tiny ringtail possum huddled inside the building.

After a quick call to wildlife carers, the dehydrated possum was given some special care and is now recovering well.

“As far as we know we have never had any native animals visiting our technology department,” Beaconhills College’s head of citizenship and service Clare Tuohy said.

“News of the safe new housing arrangements must have spread on the possum grapevine.”

Ms Tuohy said the possum boxes would be donated to the Cardinia Environmental Coalition, who will arrange climbers to place them in trees across bushfire damaged areas in the Bunyip State Forest and East Gippsland.
