Tina’s two hats – clown, president

SHE’S best known for clowning around, and Tina McInerney won’t change that – even after taking on the role of President of the Emerald Rotary Club.
For the past five years, Tina has dressed up as a clown for the annual Thomas Run, held by the Rotary Club that sees local kids race against Thomas the Tank Engine.
“I just love it,” she said with a smile.
“It’s so much fun. I hope as president of the club, that I can give the prizes dressed as a clown.
“Because I’m not going to give it up.”
Tina, who has been wanting to join the Emerald Rotary Club for years, finally joined it five years ago.
“I was always associated with the club through my ex-husband,” she said.
“So I joined five years ago, and its just great.
“In this club, we are all friends, mums bring their young kids and we all have a laugh – as well as doing our bit for the community.”
Tina said the Emerald branch was different to many other clubs, which were struggling to get younger members.
“We have four members who have young kids,” she said.
“I think it’s because we are so inclusive and people that are moving into the area see the club as a perfect opportunity to meet new people and be a part of the community.” The club also stands out for its association with local real estate agents. The club sends a welcome letter to all new residents when they move into town.
“We are basically a group of friends who give back to the community too,” she said.
“It is a great thing to be involved in.” While Tina loves Rotary, her daughter cannot understand why she’s so involved.
“I was saving a stamp the other day and she asked why I was doing it,” Tina said.
“And I said to her that stamp will be sent to another place, which will be onsold to someone and money made for people who need it. Every one in Rotary does this and raise $75,000 a year – that makes me think that one person can make a difference.”
This year the club will be involved in the annual Thomas Run, hold a Debutante Ball, as well as many other community events.
