Grass-fed heifers take the market lead

AFTER some very successful store cattle sales at VLE Pakenham the previous week, the competition between feedlots and restockers was stronger, which saw a price lift of four cents to 12 cents per kilogram for suitable cattle.
This competition was directed over a similar size penning that included several pens of grown steers, and a small selection of cows, as well as some very good quality vealers and yearlings.
Demand was strong for all classes of cattle, which saw a general price trend that was firm to four cents per kilogram dearer.
A penning of 240 vealers included some excellent quality that made from 210 cents to 233.2 cents per kilogram.
These were complemented by supplementary fed yearlings of equal quality that made to 230.6 cents per kilogram.
Numerous sales of other vealers and supplementary fed yearlings that made from 190 cents to 215 cents with most others from the offering of 680 yearlings between 170 cents to 198 cents per kilogram.
Grass finished heifers sold particularly well making mostly from 178 cents to 192 cents per kilogram.
Feedlots and restockers featured in the mix paying up to 230 cents per kilogram with most purchases between 178 cents and 200 cents per kilogram.
Competition was also strong for the 120 grown steers and bullocks penned, and this saw prices paid range between 184 cents and 187 cents for the best quality, and 166 cents and 179 cents per kilogram for others.
