Pakenham locals had the chance to view a range of classic and whacky vehicles as they underwent final preparations for the Variety Bash charity event from Melbourne to Cairns.

More than 115 vehicles and 360 colourful characters entered the 11-day event which is celebrating its 30th year to support ’Variety – the Children’s Charity’ in raising much-needed funds to help kids who are sick, disadvantaged or living with a disability.

The first two days of the event will see Variety present $100,000 in grants to schools and families throughout Victoria – giving entrants and the public the opportunity to see how Variety changes the lives of kids in need.

Having travelled more than 108,795 kilometres since it started, the Variety Bash has raised over $23 million for children in need.

Bridgestone Select Pakenham opened its doors for a day of safety checks on Sunday 10 July and owner Danny Scott said he was proud to support a worthy cause.

“We supplied the venue to help the entrants scrutineer the cars before the big event,” he said.

“We would have had about 40-plus come through and we had a nice big car park to offer them.

“We wanted to support them and this was our way of helping to get their event started – it was very successful and I think everyone was very happy.”

Money raised through a sausage sizzle also went towards Variety Bash fundraising.

Variety chief executive Mandy Burns said Danny provided an access point for all entrants in the South-East.

“Across two locations we scrutineered most of the 109 cars that will be travelling north to Cairns via South Australia which is really important,” she said.

“They travel more than 5000km with little to no tarmac so we have to make sure they cars are in working order.

“All of those 109 vehicles have all raised a minimum of $5000 to $7000 to support Variety to make a difference for disadvantaged kids.”

Variety Bash motoring event manager Scott Watson said it was a fantastic day in Pakenham.

“It was a day to ensure the cars are Bash ready and safe,” he said.

“We haven’t been able to run since 2019, so there was a feeling of excitement and anticipation in the air.

“This is our 30th Bash, kicking off on August 16 from the Melbourne Showgrounds.”
