A serious collision at the South Gippsland Freeway entry ramp has closed the Monash Freeway to city-bound traffic.

A woman aged in her late 20s has been transported to hospital with life threatening injuries.

The exact circumstances around the collision are still being established but Victoria Police say it’s understood five vehicles collided about 9.05am. No one else was transported to hospital.

Diversions have been set up at the Belgrave Hallam Road exit.

Motorists are urged to exit the inbound lanes of the Monash Freeway as soon as they can and use the Princes Highway instead.

Motorists will be able to re-enter the city bound lanes of the Monash at Heatherton Road or Stud Road.

Emergency services remain on site and the road will reopen when it is safe to do so.

Anyone with dash cam footage or who witnessed the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
